Very interesting book, some will agree and others wont but the bottom line is that every baby deserves attention and care.

we spend so much time working consciously with our children when parenting is so much easier when their subconscious mind is in synch... You might be interested in the book Smart Parenting: Creating Miracles with SleepTalk

What ever happened to letting kid be kids. I'm sick and tired of everyone telling us parents how, what, where, when and why we should raise our families. It's not a point of perfection because we will always fall short. Do the best you can and use your gut feelings, they are normally right. Take the child out of a child and whay do you have?

An empty shell!

Garth, take a look at the book "everything bad is good for you" - it'll really mess with your head if you decide you need to limit the time spent by kids watching tv and playing computer games...

I tend to go by the Oxygen Mask theory: attend to yourself first, so you're in decent enough shape to attend to those you're caring for.

That's more of a responsibility than a right. If you're not in good enough shape to do right by both yourself and (say) the kids, something's got to give -- and it's the shape bit.

I pray I never paint myself into a corner on this one.

I believe that adult (in my case married) relationships, various energies and focuses ebb and flo. Once we were very wrapped up in each other and the just being of 2. At the moment the focus is working as a team with garth to keep the house (and family, with 3rd baby due this year) running as smoothly as possible.

Some have commented that I should do more for my husband, but I believe, as I do with my children also, that they should be encouraged to do more for themselves. My first priority as the central nervous system of our family, is my relationship with me, second is with my children, who depend on me to keep them alive (while existing within a BALANCED framework of boundaries and love/support).
Thirdly is G, who by and large can look after himself for now.

We expect these focuses to shift as children hit various developmental stages and free up more time to return to focus on more selfish pursuits.

I laughed when I read this.. Not because of the topic of parenting, but because I read it on the Django website, and clearly it has nothing to do with Django the web development tool which I have a keen interest in. Strange in itself, but in a cosmic coincidence I work for the publisher that published the book. Alas we don't use Django .. yet.

I'll take it one further, today's families are completely child-centered. Over-parenting is an understatement. I am the father of six children and the first and foremost relationship in our household is the one between my wife and I. The children come second because if the a priori relationship is not healthy then ours w/ them won't be either.
